19 - Longford
County Longford, in Leinster, is Ireland’s fourth smallest county. The county derives its name from ‘long’ meaning ship, and ‘phort’ meaning dock. Strange for a landlocked county, but back in the early 8th to 11th century, many towns used this as their name, alas, only this one stuck. Longford’s county crest says ‘daingean agus dílis’ meaning ‘strong and loyal’. It features a castle to represent strength, and a hound courant to represent loyalty. This flag captures a golden Irish wolfhound sprinting on a strong Longford navy plain.
