County Kilkenny is located in Leinster, and its borders are based on the ancient Kingdom of Ossory or ‘Osraighe’. It’s hard to talk about Kilkenny without touching on its rich history and successes in hurling. Nicknamed the ‘Kilkenny Cats’, it would be easy to presume the term developed from their gold and black striped shirts, and the fluid alliteration, but the term Kilkenny Cats dates back to at least the 14th century. Kilkenny Cats are said to be two cats that battled each other so ferociously, that all that was left at the end were their tails. The term has often been satirically used to highlight a battle that would be detrimental to both sides. This sharp gold and black flag captures the ferociousness of those cats, while also celebrating Kilkenny’s rich GAA traditions. The twelve stripes are a nod to the twelve baronies, or parishes, of Kilkenny.
