County Galway, in Connacht, sits on Ireland’s Atlantic coast. Galway is truly a county of two halves, the vibrant urban centre of Galway City, and the vast rural countryside that stretches west from it. This countryside is home to infamously beautiful Connemara. From lakes, to beaches, mountains to bogland, Connemara truly has it all, not to mention its twenty five islands, dotted along its coast. This link between the land and the sea was intrinsic to the forming of Galway City. The city, known as the ‘City of Tribes’ after the fourteen merchant families that ran it between the 14th and 19th centuries, prospered by utilising Galway’s port to trade. This maroon flag pays tribute to the fourteen families and the rough Atlantic waves that crash into the islands and the Connemara coast.
